A WW1 Cavalry wooden sketch board with brass compass engraved with the maker's mark J H Steward, London. These were designed to be strapped to the arm of cavalrymen, the leather strap with swivel joint enabled the user to rotate the board to align the compass. The sketch was made on paper roll, wound round the side rollers. Often used by observers to make sketches of enemy positions. English, circa 1914.
